Song of the day - “Evil Line” by Coaltar of the Deepers!
Coaltar of the Deepers are an alternative rock band from Japan. They formed in May 1991. Although primarily influenced by shoegaze and post-rock sound, their sound incorporates musical elements as diverse as thrash metal, electronica, neo-acoustic, and bossa nova.
Narasaki, while being the leader of the band, has been an active musician in Japan. In 1998, he created the side project Sadesper Record which is more electronic based than Coaltar of the Deepers. In 2004, the second Sadesper Record album was released. He has also contributed to the band Tokusatsu in which the group created the soundtrack for the movie Stacy: Attack of the Schoolgirl Zombies.
Narasaki has also contributed to the shoegaze band Astrobrite. He contributed a remix of the track ‘Snowflakes’ to the spin-off of the video game Persona 4, Persona 4: Dancing All Night for the PlayStation Vita. Narasaki also takes credit for producing all the background music for the anime adaptation of Deadman Wonderland.

Storm Stereo 114: FM Trölli, July 4
Storm Stereo for Trölli FM. A show for summer, with bossa nova, soul, indie, reggae, hip hop and more.
Listen back to the Storm Stereo show for Trölli FM, that aired on July 4, 2024. A show for summer. Featuring rare blues from Guinea, Bossa Nova gems from Greece, Brazil and library archives, some neo-soul that could easily have been pulled from the ’70s, summery electropop, plus some mellow reggae and loungin’ hip-hop for good measure. Have been on the road and busy with band stuff in Athens…

capsule in H magazine vol. 60 (April 2003)
"We had a computer in the house before the average family could afford them and when I look through old photos, there are tons of me sitting in front of it. I was a scary kid, always looking at a black screen with green-colored text." The person who said this is Nakata Yasutaka, who handles everything from sound production to artwork for his unit capsule alongside vocalist Koshijima Toshiko. Having spent his boyhood surrounded by machines, it was only natural that he became fascinated with technology, and by his junior high years he first started recording at home by combining his long-studied piano skills with his computer hobby. "Instead of being inspired by artists, I started making music because of computers, so in that sense I have more reverence for scientists, like Edison and so on (laughs)." Because of this background, he appears to be very unfamiliar with music, but capsule's second album CUTIE CINEMA REPLAY, due to be released in March, is filled with diverse influences ranging from French music, to bossa nova, breakbeats, electronica and more. As its title suggests, it's like the soundtrack to a cute and kitschy '70s French film. "I started getting into interior design towards the end of high school. As I get closer to how I want my place to look, the music I want to listen to in my apartment has changed, resulting in the sound on this album. I was trying to create songs that would make me only think of nice things while I'm in my house. Kind of like escaping from reality (laughs)." Does that mean the album's visuals are inspired from old European movies that had lots of cute interior décor? "I do really like that kind of stuff, but I don't know anything about it; to me, it's just fashionable. The film that's influenced me the most is Laputa: Castle in the Sky (laughs). I like vintage computers, right? So I was looking at the back of the DVD case for that movie recently and I realized why I like it so much. 'A tale from an age when machines still enjoyed being machines' was written there. During the intro sequence, there are a bunch of objects from Laputa flying around, and then a scene later on where they fall. I like that sort of dreamy yet realistic world."

Legitimately really curious about the music question from that kin ask meme you just reblogged. I'd love an answer about any of your kintypes, but I'm especially interested to know if there's any music that you associate with/really resonates with your experience as an isopod.
THANK YOU
See, here's the thing, I never really associate music with any of my theriotypes. Animalistic species specifically. I get into an animalistic mindset by being in nature or acting out instincts, and music (or any other form of art) is going to take me out of that, especially if there's lyrics. There's no bird music to me, no bug music or mustelid music. I just don't associate it, positively or negatively. I guess no, to answer your question. To be in an isopod shift I'd rather be by the ocean or eat foods similar to what we eat in the wild (seaweed salad I guess), since that's what feels the most animalistic to me. Especially for isopod shifts, an animal that does not have a traditional chordate's sense of hearing, I'm not going to vibe with music. I'd share MyNoise generators that have those vibes for me before any songs.
Music-related shifts for me are all about the sapient kintypes, i.e. computer, Novakid, or fictotypes. But I liked this particular ask meme's music question because it differentiated songs, bands, and genres! And I love to talk genre so!
Individual songs are gonna be (Link) Blame by Air Traffic Controller, Never Existed by Keldian, Take 3 by Inner Wave, Lonesome Dreams by Lord Huron, (for Novakid) S.T.A.R. Child by The Orion Experience, Lightning Riders by AWOLNATION, Space Western by Rich Aucoin, Propane Nightmares by Pendulum, Nova by VNV Nation, (...other) Dreams by Joakim Karud (I cannot concisely explain why it puts me in a computer mindset)
Coincidentally, today (after reblogging that!) I just happened upon a song I didn't know about before, from a band with only 1 album and 10 listeners on Spotify, only available for streaming on a single website in the depths of the obscure music Internet, which catapulted me into a Novakid shift, so here's that, obviously
But I feel like I've listed those songs a million times and never mentioned that genres in general are what "computer kintype music" is for me. My computer kintype is an IBM 7090 so I heavily associate it with 1970s electronic music particularly, so that playlist is a lot of vintage electronica, Space Art, Mort Garson, moog synths, songs with Casio instruments, and recent stuff that takes inspiration from that era like Eyeliner, Jack Stauber, MNQN, and certain synthwave artists. I also associate it a lot with computer animation (pre-Disney-Pixar) so that's a lot of vaporwave and also every soundtrack album for all the Mind's Eye films (those are by James Reynolds, Jan Hammer and Thomas Dolby). I've never been able to find a really good version online of the song from Fabricated Rhythm, which I think is just called Fabricated Rhythm, but I like that too.
Post-punk reminds me of autumn/whatever my weird cryptic kintype is that's associated with the season, but maybe that's just because I'm happiest in fall and I love post-punk. However if anyone can help explain why Figure In the Background by Snake Pool gives me species euphoria lmk
#ask#music talk#sorry if you didn't get the answer you were hoping for! music just really does not make me feel more animal#I used to try and force it to‚ I kept a raven playlist but I eventually realized it was really all just aesthetic and wasn't actually shift#and it was almost entirely Louie Zong anyways

Music Headcanons
If anyone's curious (and you're not, don't lie), here's what I think Looker and Anabel's music preferences are:
Looker enjoys music. Internationally. - 70s Latin Funk/Jazz (Of course he would) - Fuck it, just Jazz in general. Acid Jazz. - Bossa Nova - 60s styled Romantic tracks... Groovy, baby... Oh, Behave - Japanese 80s Pop (Tatsuro Yamashita bros...) - Alternative/Indie Rock - Songs that make him cry or stare at the ceiling while frowning.
Anabel has a taste for synthesizer. - 2000s/Late 90s Electronica (Madonna...) - Eurodance - No, you don't get it, she really likes Eurodance. - French Cafe Bossa (With or without accordion) - Japanese 80s Pop -- Hey wait a minute - Easy listening New Wave or Synth (The Cure? Tears for Fears?) - Deep House Lounge Music
This is a pretty barebones list. People have insane tastes in music, they can generally like anything that's pretty good. I don't either is listening to heavy loud metal anytime soon tho. Or anything very, very vulgar. Both agents probably listen to each other's favorites regularly-- anything that's easy to put in the background.

Top Underrated Artists You Should Discover on ROVR: A Journey Beyond the Mainstream
That dusty vinyl record that is in your grandma’s attic, remember? The one with the cover that had been damaged and a band name that was hard to fathom? Its sound was like no other you ever heard on the planet; it was a pulsating energy that transports you into another world. That is what is magical about finding amazing underrated music—this sonic expedition does not follow any predictable patterns and rather ignites a love for unexpected things.
ROVR isn’t an ordinary radio station. We are the antithesis of clichéd, expected and brainwashing mainstream media. Our radio has reinvented itself as a curator of sound-like universe where rare pearls glitter even brighter than ever before. From the Ethiopian jazz revival’s pulsating rhythms to the hauntingly beautiful throat singing of Mongolia, ROVR grants you access to the unheard of treasures from all over the globe.
The Global Groove
The internet has opened doors for a wide variety of music genres from across continents. One genre making waves again is Ethiopian Jazz. It’s made up of soulful melodies, intricate horn sections, and captivating rhythms. Explore Mulatu Astatke’s music who has been dubbed “the father of Ethio-jazz” his music is full of life and energetic. Check out his famous track "Yekatit (Dimitri from Paris Remix)" on ROVR and get ready to be transported to the heart of Addis Ababa.
Crossing Borders
Music should have no boundaries. The best artists are constantly going beyond the limits, obliterating the distinctions and inventing sounds that cannot be pigeonholed. Think of Sophie, a Scottish electronic music producer whose vibrant combination of pop, electronica, and hyperpop reframed the sound of the late 2010s. Her music is a riotous blend of candy-colored melodies, glitchy textures, and playful vocals—a sonic fun park that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. Check out her ROVR single “Bffa CULT” if you want to dance on your couch.
Finding Local Hidden Treasures
There is something special about discovering artists from where you live. Musicians from our areas infuse their work with local influences – they tell stories unique to their regions through sound. Bandcamp reviews and local radio shows are a great place to find such a diamond in the rough. Luísa Sonza is causing quite a stir with her Brazilian fusion of pop, funk, and bossa nova resulting in an irresistible sophisticated feel. You can listen to “Braba”, one of her top songs on ROVR; this experience will leave you hanging at its climax barely able to contain yourself amidst all the energy that propels Brazilian pop music forward
Genre-Bending Mavericks
Innovation doesn’t exist alone. Quite often, artists will look at various genres and come up with a fusion that is entirely unique; this kind of music defies every conceivable stereotype or conventional music norm. On ROVR, musicians like Lido Pimienta, Canadian singer-songwriter who combines electronic music with Colombian folk and indigenous chanting are present. Her songs describe her journey through life as she learns about herself and her people in a beautiful way. Find out more by listening to the incredible song called “No Se” on ROVR and you will realize what it means to create genre-mashing kind of music.
Bringing Treasures to Light
All over the world, underground music thrives. For example, we have witnessed rapid expansion of Korean Indie Rock scene. Some groups such as The xx have made profound lyrics alongside intricate guitar work which is essentially touchy-feely for individuals searching for meaning in their lives. They sound sad but hopeful making them ideal for introspective nights. Listen to one of their touching songs called “Arirang” on ROVR if you want a taste of real Korean Indie rock from its soul.
And Now….
The thing that is special about “underestimated music” is its power to astonish and motivate, forcing us outside our comfort zone, exposing us to new cultures, and sparking an interest in the unexplored. ROVR goes beyond being just a music platform; it opens up a window for sonic discovery. Therefore, pick your earphones and join us on this musical trip as we take you through amazing experiences.
What will become of the future of discovering music? Will AI algorithms be responsible for our playlists or will accidental surfing on the net keep leading us? One thing remains certain- journeying to find new music matters as much as the new music itself. For this thrilling escapade let ROVR be your compass.

Yaeji’s new video is simply easy breezy beautiful…
Oh yeah, I went there (◠‿◠✿)
With her friends and dog Jiji in tow, the Korean singer/producer obtains her maid licence, scootering around town until they’re hassled by a bunch of recent graduates from the local punk academy. But with a few kind epiphanies written on bananas, they’re able to bring an end to the turf war, ending with everyone dancing the street.
Describing the track as ‘a sequel that weaves a thread through my past releases (and my past selves), Yaeji explains (via Stereogum):
‘“Learning to let go” – something i learned from “For Granted”
“진정한 변화는 (true change) it’s not so easy, it’s not so breezy” – from “Submerge FM”
“한장 한장 기록으로 채운 나의 20대의 일기장을 펼쳐서 (I opened up my diary filled with memories of my 20s)” – from “I’ll Remember for you, I’ll Remember For Me”
“시간이란게 점점더 빨라지며 (time keeps moving faster and faster)” – from “29”
“isn’t it so crazy how we pass down what we didn’t want to” – from “Done (Let’s Get It)”
Sonically, the song connects a thread between me now and me back in middle school —when I discovered bossa nova, drum and bass, and house through Korean and Japanese pop electronica. “easy breezy” is a thread, a tribute, a recollection of memories, and an encouraging push for us to bring forth change with courage and laughter. we hold the power in our hands, and we should never doubt that. change is now.'
Yaeji makes debut album With a Hammer is out now. Read the review for her 2020 mixtape, WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던, here.
